Trump to Meet with El Salvador’s President Bukele

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a meeting with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. On the 13th (local time), Trump stated on his social media, “I’m looking forward to meeting President Bukele on Monday,” adding, “Our two countries are working closely together to eradicate terrorist organizations and build a future of prosperity.”

President Trump specifically mentioned that El Salvador has accepted the transfer of foreign violent criminals, considered a threat to the U.S. and the international community, into its detention facilities.

“President Bukele has agreed to detain some of the world’s most violent foreign criminals in his country’s prisons,” Trump said. “These individuals are now under the sole custody of El Salvador, and their fate is in the hands of President Bukele and his government.”

He added, “These savages will never again threaten or harm American citizens.”

The United States has reached an agreement with El Salvador to transfer high-risk individuals and deportable foreign nationals to Salvadoran prisons. El Salvador operates some of the world’s largest and most secure detention facilities.

Meanwhile, El Salvador was the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. The government has used state funds to purchase Bitcoin and has also experimented with Bitcoin-backed sovereign bonds and geothermal-powered Bitcoin mining.
