SEC Delays Decision on Crypto ETF Redemptions and Ethereum Staking

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delayed its decision on whether to allow spot redemptions for the WisdomTree Bitcoin Fund (BTCW), the VanEck Bitcoin Fund (BITB), and the Ethereum Fund (ETHW).

According to CoinDesk on the 14th (local time), the SEC has also postponed its review of Grayscale's request to allow staking for its Ethereum Trust (ETHE) and Mini Ethereum Trust (ETH).

While the SEC has never permitted staking in spot Ethereum ETFs, speculation about a potential shift in regulatory direction has risen following the appointment of Paul Atkins as the new SEC chair.

Although Hong Kong, Canada, and parts of Europe have already approved ETF staking, it remains unclear whether the SEC will follow suit.

Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst James Seyffart commented, “The SEC doesn’t rush just because other regulators have approved something. They will proceed at their own pace.”

The SEC is expected to make a decision on whether to allow spot redemptions for Bitwise and WisdomTree products by June 3, and a decision on Grayscale’s staking proposal by June 1.
