Recently, Ran Neuner quoted a tweet from Sui co-founder Adeniyi, who wrote “Sui is the new Meta,” and speculated: “If Meta were to return to blockchain, wouldn’t they collaborate with Sui?” His reasoning is that many of the key people who led Meta’s previous blockchain efforts are now at Mysten Labs (Sui).
Here are a few thoughts I have on this:
1. It’s unlikely that Meta would build directly on top of Sui.
Given Meta's world-class engineers, vast network, and capital, it’s hard to imagine they’d choose to “piggyback” on a Layer 1 chain like Sui—especially when they once tried to build their own. Meta already has a massive infrastructure and the resources to build something on par with, or even beyond, what Sui offers. If they were serious about re-entering the blockchain space, wouldn’t they prefer to use their own stack?
2. Collaboration at the ecosystem level is more plausible.
The key people behind Move and Libra are now at Sui and Aptos, but the original vision came from Mark Zuckerberg and David Marcus. Given that, it seems natural that the Move language and its developer ecosystem would aim to remain as interoperable and shared as possible. So ecosystem-wide cooperation between Sui and Meta might make more sense than direct building.
3. One thing is certain: under a Trump administration, Big Tech will likely adopt a more aggressive business stance—especially Meta.
If Meta returns to blockchain, I believe some form of collaboration with Sui or Aptos is inevitable. While I don’t think Meta will build directly on Sui, if their relationship turns out to be closer than I expect and they do end up building on it, that would be a major development.
For now, I think it's worth watching—but without getting our hopes up too high.
