Vitalik Buterin: "I Want to Make Ethereum as Simple as Bitcoin Within 5 Years

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed his vision to simplify Ethereum, aiming to make it as straightforward as Bitcoin, according to a report by Cointelegraph on May 3 (local time).

In a recent blog post, Buterin proposed a “Layer 1 simplification”, which involves restructuring Ethereum’s consensus, execution, and data availability components to make the network more efficient and secure.

A key part of this proposal is the introduction of a “3-slot finality” model to streamline Ethereum’s consensus layer by removing complex components.

He also discussed the use of a RISC-V–based virtual machine to improve zero-knowledge proof performance by 100x and simplify the protocol itself.

RISC-V is an open-source architecture known for its minimal instruction set, allowing for easier implementation and optimization.

To further reduce complexity, Buterin suggested standardizing the Ethereum protocol and offloading non-essential features from the core layer.

Alex Svanevik, CEO of blockchain analytics firm Nansen, noted, “Ethereum no longer dominates the market the way it used to,” and stressed that this simplification strategy is a critical step for the network’s long-term survival.
